Petition to end shark finning Photo

Petition to end shark finning

The Underwater Channel is looking to get 10,000 signatures on a petition to help put an end to shark finning.

On average in recent years sharks have accounted for less than ten human deaths annually in all the world’s seas to fuel the growing demand for shark fins, man has been killing up to 100 million sharks each year. The Underwater Channel wants action and we are urging our viewers to contact the United Nations Secretary-General and request that member states be made aware of the threats to sharks and encouraged to put in place effective legislation to stop shark-finning, or more effectively police existing laws.

We are looking to get 10,000 signatures before World Ocean Day on June 8, 2009. The petition is currently online, and you can sign it electronically or by mail.

1 solo female spot available for Nov 2009 Papua New Guinea trip

We’ve just had a single spot (female) open up on our upcoming trip to the remote Eastern Fields in Papua New Guinea (led by Wetpixel’s Eric Cheng and FiNS’ Tony Wu). If you’re undecided about whether the Eastern Fields is worth going to, check out Tony’s journal from a prior trip. The expedition is booked full of great shooters here at Wetpixel, and is a fantastic opportunity to learn from experienced shooters while doing some incredible diving.

Due to cabin constraints, the spot is only open to a solo woman traveler (shares with another woman). Trip dates are Nov 24-Dec 6, 2009 out of Port Moresby. More information at our Eastern Fields expedition page!

Check out the article in this month’s Digital Photo Pro Magazine [low-res PDF] or on their website.

Northwest Dive and Travel Expo 2009 Report

Ellen Quale reports from this year’s Northwest Dive and Travel Expo in Tacoma, Washington:

On a cold and rainy morning, I left Portland at 7 AM for the 2 ½ hour drive up to Tacoma, Washington where the show was being held.  Michaela Brockstedt of Wetpixel Quarterly greeted me and showed me to the Wetpixel booth.  All of the issues of Wetpixel Quarterly were on display, and although I had a copy of the first issue, I hadn’t had a chance to see the other issues—I was like a kid in a candy store going through all the amazing images I’d not previously seen…

Michaela, Ellen, Kathryn, and Martin manned the Wetpixel booth and met many underwater photography and video enthusiasts from the Pacific Northwest. Continue reading for full report and photos!
