Scientists prove penguins regularly feast on jellyfish

In a paper published in Frontiers in Ecology last month, scientists have shown that several species of penguins regularly feed on jellyfish. This find is surprising as it was traditionally thought that penguins subsist primarily on nutrient dense foods like fish. Jellyfish are over 90 percent water and mean that the penguins expend a lot of energy for not a lot of caloric payback for this food source.

Scientists prove that Jellyfish sleep

In a paper published last week in the journal Current Biology, scientists have shown that at least some jellyfish sleep. This discovery is noteworthy as jellyfish are simple organisms that do not have brains, but rather a network of nerves. To prove that the jellyfish they were studying sleep, the scientists needed to prove three behavioral criteria, which they did.

Using exploding jellyfish populations to make biodegradable diapers

Overfishing of commercial fish stocks and removal of top predators worldwide have caused the populations of jellyfish worldwide to skyrocket. Jellyfish blooms can be problematic for a number of reasons including clogging intake valves and taking over swimming areas. Scientists believe we will see jellyfish blooms more and more in coming years. Now one startup has come up with a product to make use of the overabundant jellies, diapers.
