The team on the expedition vessel Nautilus has posted some amazing video of a Halitrephes maasi jellyfish. It was filmed by ROV at a depth of 1225m (4019 ft) in the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California, Mexico.
In a paper published in Frontiers in Ecology last month, scientists have shown that several species of penguins regularly feed on jellyfish. This find is surprising as it was traditionally thought that penguins subsist primarily on nutrient dense foods like fish. Jellyfish are over 90 percent water and mean that the penguins expend a lot of energy for not a lot of caloric payback for this food source.

This discovery is noteworthy as jellyfish are simple organisms that do not have brains, but rather a network of nerves. To prove that the jellyfish they were studying sleep, the scientists needed to prove three behavioral criteria, which they did.

Jellyfish blooms can be problematic for a number of reasons including clogging intake valves and taking over swimming areas. Scientists believe we will see jellyfish blooms more and more in coming years. Now one startup has come up with a product to make use of the overabundant jellies, diapers.
